Overview

Roles: UX Consultant, Data Analyst | Tools: Figma, MS Excel | Team Size: 4

Insideschools' 'Educational Guides & Reports' web page, previously named 'Resources', houses various resources such as different types of public schools, guides on how to pick a school, and information about afterschool programs.

Challenge

The clunky design made the 'Resources' webpage unintuitive leading to users abandoning the web page within seconds. Questions from parents about information already available on the page at InsideSchool workshops also reinforced the need to improve the experience of the page.

Solution

Informed by user data insights generated from 8 workshops for families that are new to NYC, I collaborated with the editors and developer on the team to categorise the content on the page and use the categories as a new filter, redesigning the 'Resources' page to the 'Educational Guides & Reports' page, improving the experience and usability of the page.

Impact

I identified how to restructure the information architecture of the 'Educational Guides & Reports', previously named 'Resources', on the InsideSchools website increasing usability and leading to an approximately 25% increase in monthly page views.

APPROACH

Approach

01
Data Analysis

I led data analysis of over 6000 data attributes collected at workshops via 400+ stakeholders. Analysing the questions asked by parents during appointments with InsideSchools members at the worksops made me realise that many of the topics are covered on the 'Resources' web page on the InsideSchools website. I sorted these questions under broad categories and used these as the foundation to categorise the content on the 'Resources' web page.

02
UX Design

Collaborating with the Team Editors, I helped finalise the categories on Contentful, a headless content management system that stores the content database. The developer worked on the staging site and presented the first draft to the team with the categories as a separate filter.

Draft of the staging site presented to the team

While the draft was a great improvement from the previous design, I suggested a few changes to further enhance the visual hierarchy and the experience of the web page.

Low-fi wireframes I shared with the development team to explain the enhancements

Adding visual hierarchy by adjusting with spacing and balance to draw attention to the Search bar.

Creating better feedback system to show the relation between filters and resources, increasing system visibility.

Redirecting users to ensure they get the help they need
